On September 15, local HRC Political Co-chair Jonathan
Russell and Molly Simmons of the HRC Board of Governors, along with a sizable crowd, turned out to Presser Hall at Agnes Scott College to hear Judy Shepard talk. She discussed her just-released book, The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed, and took questions from the crowd for about 45 minutes.
Although there have been several different artistic interpretations
of the events of her son Matthew's murder in Laramie, Wyoming, 11 years ago, until now, Judy herself has not given her account of her family's experience. The final question came from a local high school student, who asked Judy's advice for dealing with hate speech. Judy believes that the best way to combat these attitudes and behaviors is for each person to tell his or her own story, advice that is often echoed by Human Rights Campaign.
